Charlie Had To Die, Says Lost Producer

Charlie didn’t have to die!
Lost executive producer Carlton Cuse has explained the decision to kill off the popular character of Charlie Pace at the end of the third season.
In an interview with TV Guide in the US, Cuse stated that axing Dominic Monaghan from the show was dictated by the narrative.
“We felt like we needed to pay off Desmond’s prognostications. We thought about various ways in which that could pay off, but, ultimately, we came to the conclusion that the best version of the story was for Charlie to die.”
“We felt like we had told the biggest and most important parts of Charlie’s story. He was an addict; he recovered from his addiction; he found some meaning and purpose in his relationship with Claire. It just felt like this was the best path for this character.”
Branding Monaghan a “wonderful guy and a terrific actor,” Cuse admitted that it was “very hard to say goodbye to Dominic.”

That is so stupid! Charlie was the BEST! You’re gonna lose so many fans because of this! Who cares about Desmund’s predictions? He could of just saved Charlie’s life EVERY time! He didn’t have to die at such a young age, just cuz he said he was gonna die, it could’ve been as an old man or something! Geez! Why did Desmund even have visions of Charlie dying in the first place, huh? WE LOVE CHARLIE! Can’t he like not really be dead, or something? Bring him back! PLEASE!!!! =’(
ok wtf to progress des’ story it would have been better if he died cause he had no-one and no kid dont get me wrong im a big fan of des its just im more a fan of charlie anyway it would have made a great ending of sacrifice like goes out like a true hero to save a charlie i mean des is a cool character but the visions was all he had to that character at the mo introduce another storyline for him at least before you finish off that one and anyway carlie as i said had more to live for and to be honest is played by the coolest actor there was more to charlie than just claire and drugs i mean you never got to see him grow up as a father i soo hope the producers bring him back

The way how Charlie died was stupid. He could have clearly saved himself by running through the hatch closing it behind him. Even if he didn’t close the hatch it would have taken a while for that entire place to submerge under water.
I agree, the way he died was extremely stupid! He was the best - Lets see if the producers CARE to bring charlie back, if not we might not CARE to watch the show anymore!

BUT i dont bite that “Desmond” argument, c’mon you create a big show with Lost, because is a very intelligent script , so if you said there is no other way to go on with Charlie’s character..mmmm i DON’T BITE THAT.
OK, take an empty water bottle, tip it on a 90 degree angle and hold it down in a sink full of water. What happens? An air pocket gets trapped at the top of the bottle. The bottle cannot fill up with water all the way. So Charlie can’t drown. So he’s not dead yet. He can’t be. How does he die?

I have to agree with Fabiola! Can’t you rewrite the scirpt? I was so sad coz Charlie died. And side note i thinK DES wasn’t doing his best to save Charlie. He should of tried. Though “he had to die” so thats how it had to be right? Wrong….

The writers should make a miracle where charlie did not actually die and somehow he comes back for season four or it will make a huge impact on the feeling of the show.

I have never watched the show but i was planning on watching it. Now that my favorite actor is gone though screw that!!!!! Why did he have to die???? Charlie isn’t dead.I have the inside scoop.My cousin works the lighting for the TV show and he told me that he has discussed Charlie’s death with the writers, and that he knows for a FACT that Charlie isn’t dead, and he will be appearing in most of the episodes next season. So don’t worry lost fans Charlie will survive!!!!

the island could have just been testing charlie like they did with some of the other characters in the show and now that he did the right thing he could be saved..also he could have easly waited for the water pressure to stop and just swam right out..
I seriously cant believe you killed off Charlie. He was the best. I would have been better if Desmond woke up, saw that he was gone, and since in his visions that wasn’t supposed to happen, he dove in after Charlie to tell him he didn’t have to do it. But also, Charlie closed the door on himself, becasue he knew he had to die. But if Desmond had told him he didn’t, all he would of had to do was punch in the code then dive back through the moon pool. Also, what is the whole think with the eye patch man? Desmond shot him with a spear through the heart and he still lives? I don’t think that was a smart choice. I think that if he had been dead still, none of it would have happened, and he would of never made the grinade go off. Charlie was the sweetest character and had a great connection with Claire just before he left. Just please bring him back. Because earlier the show said something about people coming back. Like eye patch man. And Locke, he was shot in the stomach, and he was fine. Also, I think to bring Charlie back, you should say that Desmond got him out on time, and since the looking glass was flooding, he should of carried him back up to the boat an revived him.

I agree with everyone on this site. LOST is going to lose a lot of viewership for killing off Charlie. He was one of the best characters, and one of the only characters I actually give a hoot about. To be honest, the ones that are usually featured (Jack, for example) I could care less about. I’m not that sympathetic to Kate and Sawyer either. Charlie is a good-hearted character and Dominic is an amazing actor. Check the Nielson ratings this season. I bet it will be down a lot from last year, and I hope the LOST producers take a good hard look at the information and admit to themselves that they made a terrible decision.

Without Charlie, there is no reason to watch Lost anymore. Locke is now a murderer. Who will root for him to get off the island? What a bunch of LOSERS. Tired of all the 3-Way Drama between Kate, Sawyer and Jack. It’s sooooo Boring. The only pure unselfish love on that island was between Charlie and Claire. Just 2 people truly caring for each other. The writers never cared to explain to viewers why Hurley has never lost an ounce considering food is hard to come by and never bothered to explain that mysterious Black Cloud that came for some people and left others alone. It’s just not part of the story anymore since the “The Others” (which are Human and not Supernatural) came on the scene to tell of man-made experiments on this island. TAPS has more encounters with the supernatural then this island anymore. The writers couldn’t make up their minds to stay with SCARY UNEXPLAINED or go with the BAD HUMANS. They seemed to have chosen the BAD HUMANS story line. There was no explanation for all that crap but all of a sudden Charlie’s Death had to be fulfilled because of some writer’s pre-occupation with Desmond’s Visions. How lame can Lost get? Charlie didn’t need to die. Nothing these writers have done so far makes any sense. Why start with Charlie? And as far as “looks” go he was by far the best looking person on that island.

I personally think the whole thing sucks. I totally agree with the people that said that there was still air in the hatch. They should have also made sure that the mikhail dude was dead. But I know he was saving desmond by locking the door, but still they could have swam out. Sadly I dont think he will come back…we saw him drown. Of course someone else could have saved him…but I dont think so. Also when Hurley sees him at the crazy home, this other dude saw him first. He said something to the effects of “that guy is starring at you”, in reference to Charlie. But maybe they are all just crazy. If they found the plane at the bottom of the ocean and the bodies…how can Charlie be dead twice…so maybe this is just some odd deminsion and in the end they all decide not to get on the flight in the first place…that would be lame though, for all the trouble of the show.

We really liked Charlie’s character, too! However, I believe the reason Charlie “had” to die probably has more to do with the fact that he is filming in the Hobbit and cannot be in New Zealand and Hawaii at the same time. Financially speaking, the Hobbit surely weighs in and no doubt he had a contract of some sort that would tie him to any future Hobbit/Lord of the Rings type movies. So, there you go, that is the sole source of consolation my husband and I have found in the loss of Charlie and why they “lead” up to it, so that we were mentally prepared for the “inevitable”.

I don’t really buy the story of why Charlie had to die. My husband and I were big fans of the show but this season just didn’t measure up. (They brought Bobby Ewing back after he was dead a season on “Dallas”; It was all a bad dream.) Watching Lost has been a bad dream since Charlie left. He was the only really likeable character in the show.

Well first of all killing off charlie was the stupidest mistake you guys have ever made i mean like he went through so much stuff in the series and just kill him off like that.Second of all you have no choice but to bring him back in the 5 season because the water that came through the looking glass couldnt go past the top of the hole because of the trapped air inside so there is no way he could of died. I think you should bring him back by him floating in the ocean and the survivors see him and get him and then he lives tada mother ****ers HE MUST LIVE HE IS MY FAVORITE ****ING CHARACTER!!!!!!!!!!!
